Re TO TOUCH 45 AGAINST DOLLAR BY MARCH 2000: POLL
Article Abstract:
A bi-annual poll undertaken by Mecklai Financial & Commercial Services Ltd in March 1999 shows that the market expects the rupee to touch 45 against the dollar by March 2000. The poll was done on 450 respondents who gave their expectations of the rupee- dollar exchange rate for the next 3, 6 and 12 months. They expect the rupee to touch 43.18 against the dollar by June 1999, 43.94 by September 1999 and 45.60 by March 2000. (khr)

Re FINISHES STRONGER AT 42.35
Article Abstract:
The rupee opened at 42.45/46, reached a high of 42.27/28 and closed at 42.35/38 against the dollar at the foreign exchange market on October 5, 1998. Banks liquidated their long positions to avoid further losses due to the fall of the dollar. But the lower levels saw increased buying interest which helped the dollar gain. (khr)

The rupee closed at 42.32/33 in the foreign exchange market on October 16, 1998 (42.30/31 on October 15, 1998). During the day, the rupee appreciated against the dollar as the demand was low despite sufficient supply of dollars. State Bank of India also bought dollars from the market. (ag)
