Steve Forbes is not presenting a very appealing image as he campaigns in the run-up to the Republican primaries. He comes across as very bland and boring, and his presence will simply serve to damage the prospects of other Republican candidates. Clashes between Republican candidates will be beneficial to the Democrats, especially as Vice-President Al Gore will probably not face any serious primary opposition. Forbes has been particularly critical of Texas Governor George Bush, the Republican party's best hope of regaining control of the White House.

Pat Buchanan and Gary Bauer are thought to find defection from the Republican Party an attractive idea. The party may need more defections in order to improve its performance.
