The Japanese stock exchange sank to its lowest closing level due to the Russian financial crisis. Cautious stance in Tokyo

Asian stock markets weakened across the region in the week ending Aug 13, 1999. In Japan, the Nikkei Stock Average fell 1.6% to 17,084 while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index fell to 13,167. In the smaller Bangkok, Jakarta and Manila markets, stocks closed lower on currency concerns. In Singapore, meanwhile, the Strait Times Index fell to 2,069, while in Kuala Lumpur the composite Index fell to 703. Stocks were also down in Seoul, Sydney, Taipei and Wellington.
