Teams take first steps towards Joint STARS in space
Article Abstract:
Spectrum Astro, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics and TRW Space and Electronics Group's Defense Systems Division have been chosen jointly by the US Air Force, National Reconnaissance Office and the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency to build the $60-mil Phase I of the Discoverer II project. Each company will be advanced $10 mil for concept and trade-off studies and initial systems design. The Discoverer II Joint Office has the option to complete the 18-month Phase I of the project. Only one or two of the companies will be chosen for Phase II of the project. Northrop Grumman, a losing contender, has filed a protest which is expected to delay the awarding of the contract.

Block 10 C-17 airlifter introduces latest enhancements
Article Abstract:
Boeing Co has delivered the first two Block 10 model of the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III airlifter to the US Air Force. The new model features more than 100 design changes including a new composite/metal horizontal tail section, a dual-row airdrop capability, new anchor cable arms and additional software for the mission computer. The US Air Force will operate 48 C-17s, replacing its current fleet of C-141 Starlifters.
