Terroir and technology
Article Abstract:
The wne industry is fragmented, and this is especially true for Europe. There are fluctuations in European wine quality which are not seen in Australia, and this is partly a consequence of less predictable European weather, but is also due to fragmentation and over-regulation of the market. Appellation controlee regulations give consumers some security and prevent dubious labeling, but the regulations can also cause problems, for expample when the alcohol content is higher than usual due to good weather.

Glug, glug, glut
Article Abstract:
There are risks that the world wine market could be hit by a glut, and this could trigger price wars. There have been many new plantings, which could lead to such a glut as they come onstream. European surplus wine has been used for industrial alcohol, but this is changing as funds are being spent on improvements to vineyards in areas such as La Mancha in Spain. Protectionism could become a problem with European producers feeling threatened by New World imports.

Too much of a good thing
Article Abstract:
European winemakers are threatened with a 200% increase in the tariff on white wines shipped to the US. An excellent 1992 vintage in addition to the increased tariff is causing a large surplus of unsold wine, which may cause winemakers to cut prices.
