Potentially rich oil and gas fields in the Caspian Sea have prompted a territorial dispute among its bordering countries. Russian is trying to claim rights the Soviet Union forged in historical treaties with Iran, and Azerbaijan wants the Sea divided into national sectors.

The Japanese ship Akatsuki Maru is having trouble finding its way home from France with 1.7 tons of plutonium, as countries around the world are refusing to let it pass near. Japan's plans to accumulate plutonium for reactors is worrying the international community.

The West, and especially the US, needs to review its energy policies, particularly in the light of the Sep 11 2001 terrorist attacks on the US. Sep 11 highlighted the flaws in the theory of 'benign dependence' on Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern oil producers.
