Sony has set up TV channels and production facilities outside the USA and is performing well in a number of markets, including India. Sony is benefiting from a trend of using programs made locally for prime time TV. Sony has set up 24 channels which operate in 62 countries. China is one market that has proved difficult to conquer since there is strict control of branded channels. India could change rules relating to satellite broadcasting, and Sony will then have to adapt, the company argues.

Elisabeth Murdoch, daughter of Rupert Murdoch, and manageing director of Sky has moved to London, England, where the company is based. Sky's former chief executive, Sam Chisholm, left the company in 1997, and Murdoch has a better relationship with Mark Booth, the new chief executive. Murdoch has bought new US movies not seen in the UK, and has branded Sky channels. She has become more accepted by those in power, but her father was always an outside, and this helped him to achieve success.
