AST Research introduces its Ascentia A and Ascentia P, two new lines of Pentium-based notebook computers that provide varying degrees of multimedia and overall computing performance. Pricing for the Ascentia P series begins at $4,299, and units include 32MB of EDO RAM, 3.0GB removable hard drives, 166MHz Pentium MMX processors and 12.1-in active matrix displays. Pricing for the Ascentia A starts at $2,999, and the models include 150MHz processors, 16MB of EDO RAM, 10x CD-ROM drives and 1.44GB hard drives. Also, Fujitsu Personal Systems announces its $4,300 Stylistic 1200, a 3.9-pound personal digital assistant that provides pen-based data entry, handwriting recognition, Windows NT, 16MB of EDO RAM, a 1.4GB hard drive and a 120MHz Pentium processor. The Stylistic pen tablet also provides a 10.4-in screen that supports four separate display technologies.

Midrange PC with high-end features

Acer America's $3,499 Texas Instruments Extensa 670CDT Pentium MMX-based notebook computer features a sleek design and luxurious look and feel. The product ships with an Intel Pentium MMX microprocessor running at 166MHz, a 2.1GB hard disk drive, 256KB of Level 2 cache, a modular 10 speed CD-ROM, a 12.1-in TFT SVGA color display and 32MB of EDO RAM, which is expandable to 80MB. The CD-ROM drive is cold-swappable with the floppy disk drive. The floppy drive can also be attached with an external cable, which enables simultaneous use of all the drives. With the CD-ROM drive and primary battery pack inserted, the Extensa 670CDT weighs 6.7 lbs. The 84-key keyboard has 12 function keys, an inverted-T cursor keyboard layout, four half-sized cursor control keys and two Windows 95 keys.

NEC Computer Systems' $3,499 NEC Versa 2655CDT Pentium-based notebook is designed to provide corporate and technical users with highly-competitive performance rates for a moderate price. The Versa 2655CDT offers a 150MHz Pentium MMX CPU, a 10x CD-ROM drive, a 1.44GB hard drive, 16MB of EDO RAM, a 12.1-in thin-film transistor SVGA active matrix display and a 33.6-Kbps fax/data modem PC Card. The Versa 2655CDT's 86-key keyboard offers a solid ergonomic design, sufficient palm-rest space and a highly responsive touch-pad pointing device. The included lithium-ion battery provides over three hours of computing use, and the 2655CDT contains several monitors that indicate the status of battery strength. The 2655CDT also includes a broad range of pre-installed software.
