James Martin on Our Technology-Filled Future: Assessing the Destiny of Information
Article Abstract:
The main deficiency in information systems is getting the right information to the right people, according to James Martin. On-line terminals and programs which manipulate data and produce graphics are needed. New programming and specification languages are useful, as is videoconferencing for factual interchange only. Increased productivity through automation will create a market for leisure activities. Most important to business are information centers put together by top management and run by DP professionals. Strategic planning should include overall business planning, information planning for the new technology, and data planning through models. The traditional systems development cycle for producing decision support systems will be replaced by new methodology. Applications designed with graphics and generating error-free codes are on the horizon.
