Article Abstract:
Companies worldwide are increasingly acknowledging the benefits of extending their local and wide area networks to portable communication devices. The use of sophisticated mobile communications technology is already widespread in Japan, with an increasing number of firms introducing or experimenting with mobile computing. The mobile computing market consists of cellular telephones, PHS and portable information terminals. Portable information terminals include notebook and other handheld computers, personal digital assistants, telephones which provide short message services, handle electronic mail or incorporate Internet browsers and so-called artificially intelligent telephones.

Rising performance, falling prices help LCDs push CRTs off desktops
Article Abstract:
More desktop computers are featuring LCD monitors, challenging the dominant CRT technology. While commonly used in notebook computers, LCD monitors are beginning to show up in desktop models owing to some innovations and advantages over CRT displays. LCD displays are more compact and use less power than CRT displays. Analysts project demand for LCD monitors to grow to 200,000-400,000 standalone units in 1999.
