Syria's electric power sector
Article Abstract:
Syria's Public Electricity Establishment will be split into two companies which will manage power generation and distribution. Syria is implementing this division in order to improve operational efficiency and decentralize. Several projects for power plants are underway, including two power plants near Damascus of 600 megawatt capacity or greater, conversion of oil burning plants to natural gas and solicitation of tender offers for mobile, 200 megawatt generators. Plans are underway to supply 1,000 rural villages with electricity by 1997 or 1998.
