Vacating the science hot seat: Sir William Stewart, the Government's chief scientific advisers, retires this week
Article Abstract:
Sir William Stewart is to retire from his post as the Government's chief scientific adviser. He joined the Cabinet Office in October 1990, and the office of Science and Technology was created following the 1992 General Election. Sir William attributes the success of the science White Paper to the major consultation exercises prior to its formulation. He believes it is important to fund the best scientists regardless of their subject area, although there are some areas of science that can boost national prosperity.

Science 'safe' in shuffle
Article Abstract:
The UK Office of Science and Technology (OST) has been transferred to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). it will continue to be a separate entity and its name will not be changed. The director general of the UK's research councils, John Cadogan, argues that the functioning of the OST will not be affected, but the shadow minister for science and technology, John Battle, argues that the DTI has reduced its budget for research and development and the move could affect the future of UK scientific research.

A 'pornographer' of science
Article Abstract:
Professor of genetics at University College London (UCL), Steve Jones, is currently working on a series of programmes for the BBC on human genetics and human evolution. Jones is primarily interested in pursuing research into the ecological genetics of the 'Cepaea nemoralis' snail, which has been on-going for 25 years. Part of the reason for leaving his research to make the programmes is the fact that his last 12-14 research grant applications have been rejected.
