DVD makers lay groundwork for market expansion
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers of digital video disc (DVD) players are conducting marketing programs for these products on a global basis. Demand for DVD players have grown more rapidly than originally projected in Japan, the US and Europe. Analysts also DVDs to advance further because six leading DVD technology and format developers have started a joint licnsing program for their DVD technology patents. A shortage of DVD players will likely occur, however, because of an existing shortage of the necessary components for these players.

MD audio's growth proves music to makers' ears
Article Abstract:
The Japanese market for MiniDisc (MD) audio equipment is expected to keep on growing steadily in 1999. Of all the categories of MD audio devices, market growth has been particularly strong in playback-only protable MD players and car MD stereo systems mainly because of advances in home MD recording environments. Shipments in Sep 1998 indicate that portable MD stereo systems has outpaced stereo headphone cassette players in Japan.

Manufacturers of DVD players are launching marketing programs on a global scale. With the six leading DVD developers agreeing to a joint licensing program for the patents, observers expect the market for DVDs to grow at an even faster pace. The US market, in particular, offers significant sales potential, with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd estimating US demand to reach 3 million units in 1999.
