Metal detectors add shapes, sizes, features and functions
Article Abstract:
Metal detectors can now perform different functions in different appearances. Some metal detectors are shaped into chairs and detect more than standard weapon, but also computer chips and microscopic bits of gold. Manufacturers of metal detectors are also tailoring their products to specific market needs, such as portable detectors for presidential protection teams. Some of the metal detectors today are networkable. Some also use the multi-zone technology that uses a light on the side of the detector or on a separate panel to show the approximate location of the metal on a person. Some can also be integrated into access control devices, such as portals and card readers.

Smarter heads make better detectors
Article Abstract:
Smoke detector heads are being improved to result in quicker response times, fewer false alarms and better and faster fire identification. An official of one company says one development involves the incorporation of multi-criteria technology in smoke detectors. Another trend is performing an actual fine print, where if there is some kind or quantity of combustible in an area being watched, there is the ability to adjust the sensitivity to pick up fire from this type of combustible faster. The official says there is also the increasing use of analog addressable systems.

Routers enable fiber network
Article Abstract:
Liberty Control Networks utilized fiber-optic routers made by Raytheon Control-by-Light in linking building and environmental management systems in 85 buildings forming DERA Fort Halstead. The result is one of the largest fiber-optic building and access control networks in the UK. The fiber-optic network uses 13,000 meters of fiber optics to connect 85 out of a total of 181 buildings. The fiber-optic routers enable clear and reliable communications up to distances of 30 km without the use of repeaters as against the 130-meter limit for twisted pair wires.

The robot is mounted on a three motorized swedish or spherical wheels arranged in a triangle to make omnidirectional movement possible. Two target points are initially taken and the robot is made to move towards one of them depending on the input selection. An array of proximity sensors are used for detecting the obstacles.
