Physicians should put the interest of their patients before the financial considerations of managed care plans. Aggressive patient care advocacy can help protect physicians from liability claims. Information systems and patient care monitoring offer additional liability protection for doctors. Physicians should avoid bonus plans linking compensation to overall financial profit as they may jeopardize patient care.

Older-generation physicians who have always been workaholics and younger-generation physicians who are demanding to be allowed time to spend with their families are all finding that managed care is virtually dictating their work schedule. Most are becoming disgruntled with the trend and may soon agitate for a more acceptable arrangement.
