Fixing the penalty; Democrats push DNA testing bill to prevent wrongful executions, but GOP is wary

Issues regarding the Innocence Protection Act bill, whose purpose is to remedy discrimination in the administration of capital punishment, and similar state laws, are discussed. The bill would allow testing of all federal inmates who show the test could be relevant to their claim of innocence or wrongful sentencing. Most Americans favor such measures at the federal and state levels.

SEC 'goes criminal' on fraud; Cendant prosecution makrks an escalation in war on book-cooking
Article Abstract:
SEC claims that there has been an increase in stock-pumping and its prosecution of the Cendant Corp for this offense are discussed. Court rulings limiting corporate liability for financial fraud and the Securities Reform Act of 1995, removing joint-and-several liability absent a knowing violation of the law, contributed to this increase.

Securities reform spawns discord; circuits disagree on pleading standard for class actions

The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act as the reason for the increase in securities class action suits is discussed. The act was drafted to decrease frivolous securities fraud suits, but increased corporate accounting fraud could also be leading to increased suits.
