Psychiatric aspects of hearing impairments
Article Abstract:
The presentation, treatment and outcome of the mental health problems in children with permanent hearing impairment differ due to the differences in communication and language use. Attention deficit and affective disorders, autism, psychotic disorders, and difficulties in communication may be faced by children whose assessment becomes difficult due to their impairment. Parents' response and adaptation to their deaf child may vary depending on a variety of reasons, the most important coping resource being social support network. The intervention and management strategies are discussed.

Communication strategies for deaf children
Article Abstract:
Communication strategies for deaf children should focus on the development of age-appropriate language. A combination of sign and spoken language is the most appropriate communication strategy for deaf children. Families should adopt supportive and positive, rather than directive communication styles, fostering an interactive environment for child's language development. Language development in school-age children, role of language preference, and some other related issues are discussed. Psychological assessment and therapeutic intervention strategies are described.

Article Abstract:
The issues surrounding the assessment and treatment of deaf children with mental health problems are discussed. These issues are related to an individual child's communication, which itself is affected by medical, social and cultural factors. Treatments should be adapted to suit the individual needs of the child and family, and communication and cultural issues can been clarified through the use of an interpreter.
