Grand makeover: top designers rebuild a nonprofit's identity

Article Abstract:

Three graphics design studios help the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness (NSCAHH) refine its mission statement to enable the organization to expand its network of volunteers. NSCAHH is a national nonprofit organization that offers leadership conferences, publishes catalogs that list domestic and international work opportunities, and supports an annual hunger awareness week. Tim Girvin Design, Seattle, uses a lively illustration to convey NSCAHH's sense of growth and well-being; the symbolic elements in the illustration are linked to adjacent typography. DesignSource, Toronto, creates a symbol-logotype of NSCAHH's full name. the logo is surrounded by a hand enclosed by a circle. Leib&Gut Design, Toronto, chooses to entice students to participate by creating a design that is fresh and promising, while creating the spirit of leadership, innovation and agility. The tools used to create the designs are listed.

Recipe for homemade CD-ROMs

Article Abstract:

Publishing data on a CD-ROM is not a complex task, but it does require several steps to organize and format data and ensure its integrity. The fact that over two million CD-ROM drives have been sold, the ability of a CD-ROM to store the equivalent of 275,000 pages of information, the decline in the cost of desktop CD-ROM 'writers' and the low $1.25 manufacturing cost per disk are making CD-ROMs an ever more important media for publishing. This first in a series of articles on implementing CD-ROMs details how to convert data into a suitable digital format for use on a CD-ROM and how to prepare the image, which consists of storing and laying out the data in a specific format on a hard disk, tape or master CD-ROM. Major CD-ROM data formats, naming files and checking file structure, defragmenting and indexing the data, implementing data navigation interfaces and testing for viruses are discussed.
