Bridget Riley would avert her eyes and hurry past the Tate shop. She hates the 'vulgar plagiarism of art'...
Article Abstract:
Art galleries and museums in the UK are very aware that reproducing artworks on commercial items such as mugs and posters can be extremely profitable. The Tate Gallery shop, for example, is predicted to achieve turnover of almost 3 million pounds sterling in 1998, with exhibition catalogues taking a further 500,000 pounds sterling. This trend does not meet with approval from everyone in the art world. Bridget Riley, who hung the paintings for the Mondrian exhibition which is currently being held at the Tate Gallery, feels that artworks are vulgarized when they are treated in this way.

The age of enlightenment
Article Abstract:
Lighting design still receives much less attention as an element of architecture in the UK than it does in many other countries, particularly the US. This situation is being addressed by the National Lighting Awards 1997/1998, which offer prizes in areas including town centres/public amenities, churches, roads and commercial properties. The award for lighting a building or structure has gone to Speirs Associates in Edinburgh, Scotland, for its lighting of an electricity power substation.
