Milt Jackson
Article Abstract:
Vibraphone player and bandleader Milt Jackson began playing the guitar at an early age, and soon took up other instruments too. He joined the Evangelist Singers, a gospel quartet, as a tenor in 1939, and at the same time played with bands led by Clarence Ringo and George E. Lee. He joined Special Services in the Air Force in 1942, and in 1944 formed a quartet named the Four Sharps. He subsequently joined Dizzy Gillespie's big band.

Tal Farlow
Article Abstract:
Guitarist Talmadge Farlow taught himself to play the guitar, and did not turn professional until he was 22. After the second world war, he joined a group led by female entertainer Dardanelle, and through this work gained exposure to contemporary progressive jazz. He played in the Marshall Grant Society Band in New York, NY, and in 1949 joined the Red Norvo Trio. His time with this group determined the rest of his career.
