Raisa Gorbachev
Article Abstract:
Raisa Gorbachev, wife of former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev, met her husband when they were students living in the same hostel at Moscow State University, where she studied Marxist-Leninist philosophy. After their marriage, she worked as a schoolteacher and wrote a doctoral thesis about collective farms. She exerted considerable influence over her husband, but was not popular when he became President. Ordinary Russians only became more positive towards her during her final illness.

Can Russian democracy still survive?
Article Abstract:
The future of democracy in Russia remains uncertain. President Boris Yeltsin has shown that he is in favour of democracy, and is not likely to impose emergency rule in response to recent bomb attacks by terrorists. However, Russia's many political parties are directly linked with specific financial and industrial groups, and some do not hesitate to use force. Russia does not yet have a law-based society, and ordinary people do not trust its institutions.
