What I did in my Gap year
Article Abstract:
The first impressions of Stanford University, CA, for a British student studying for an MA there can be rather bewildering. As at all US universities, Stanford has an unwritten dress code which masks the diversity of the student population. Anyone who does not follow this dress code stands out very clearly. Similarly, there is great conformity in teaching at Stanford, in sharp contrast with UK universities. Students are expected to purchase many expensive books, and cannot simply borrow them from the library, as in the UK.

Watching is too much to bear
Article Abstract:
US journalists who have witnessed a state execution experience very mixed emotions. Some regard being a media witness as simply part of their work, and focus their attention on writing a good story. They believe that they are present at the execution on behalf of the general public, and are able to ignore their own feelings. Others are much more deeply affected, and some even question whether they should remain in journalism.
