Patched up and ready to fly
Article Abstract:
Military and commercial aircraft firms are devising several methods ranging from fully bonded-in repair to simple injection of adhesives in the repair of composite aircraft structures, which must be carried out in the field in the absence of a clean room or antoclave. The repair of honeycomb core with foam prior to bonding-on a skin patch, and riveting or bolting delaminations together are some of the options being explored. The cost of maintenance and the downtime required for repair are crucial to the selection of the appropriate method.

Defending your markets
Article Abstract:
Brigadier Brian Lowe, director general of the Defence Manufacturers' Assn, encourages defense firms to diversify. From 1985 to 1991 spending on military equipment fell 18%, with a like decline expected from 1991 to 1995. Overseas competition forces defense manufacturers to focus on high-end systems, while related markets at home are already saturated. Off-shore drilling, auto manufacture, building management and security systems are popular areas for expansion.

Tough times for machine tool firms
Article Abstract:
Weak orders threaten the UK machine tool industry. The recession has cost it 2,000 jobs and slashed its research and development budgets. The Machine Tool Trade Assn and its members are lobbying the government for tax incentives supporting investment in tools. Germany and Japan both have generous incentive packages. Meanwhile, even large British manufacturers are in trouble.
