Barriers to help-seeking for change in drinking: a gender-focused review of the literature

Article Abstract:

A review of studies published between 1977 and 1993 reveals that several client barriers and program barriers account for gender differences in 'alcohol treatment utilization rates.' Client barriers such as psychosocial risk factors, stigma connected with alcohol drinking, and lack of resources and program barriers such as staff and service characteristics are plausible factors preventing women from entering the alcohol-specific treatment programs.

Gender in relation to relapse crisis situations, coping, and outcome among treated alcoholics

Article Abstract:

Relapse crisis situations leading to successful coping and unsuccessful coping in 90 male and 35 female alcohol clients were studied. There were more similarities than differences between the genders in the encountered relapse crisis situations, and survival of a relapse crisis was linked strongly to the number of coping strategies used. The trend for females to relapse more frequently in negative affect situations was nonsignificant.

Development and validation of the drug-taking confidence questionnaire: a measure of coping self-efficacy

Article Abstract:

The Drug-Taking Confidence Questionnaire (DTCQ) is a 50-item self-report questionnaire designed to evaluate situation-specific coping self-efficacy for utilization of a specific substance. Findings from exploratory and confirmatory factor applications of the DTCQ on 713 addiction patients indicated a situation-specificity of efficacy beliefs. All eight subscales of the DTCQ were found to have good reliability.
