Global community networks and the leather footwear industry: emerging forms of economic organization in a postmodern world
Article Abstract:
A picture of the emerging global economic system is derived through an analysis of global commodity networks (GCN). A study of the roles played by Argentina, Brazil and the US in shaping a leather-footwear GCN is presented. The favorable conditions for leather export in Argentina contributed to the growth of the shoe manufacturing industry in Brazil. The latter was also positively affected by the rise in shoe consumption and the decline of the footwear industry in the US. These results indicate the importance of considering both internal and international factors in economic studies.

The international system, labor force structure, and the growth and distribution of national income: 1950-1980
Article Abstract:
The effect of the international economic system on a country's national development is studied using cross national data on labor force structure. Multivariate analyses and residual plots were used to generate data that would coincide with the world system and developmental views. Results indicated the the positive effect of manufacturing and export-oriented industries on economic growth and income equality in lesser developed countries. It was also indicated that a free trade system may not be the right path to economic growth.

Tensions between national and international control of the world food order: contours of a new food regime
Article Abstract:
The emergence of a new world economic structure may lead to a new international food regime. This new system could possibly equal the transnational companies in restructuring global production and consumption. The developments in North-South relations may also lead to the subordination and dependency of Southern economies. These changes could spell conflicts between private international capitalist and national interests. Such developments are significant in the shaping of a new food regime.
